Speaking Engagements, Encyclopedia Entry, and Forthcoming Publications

August 22, 2021 by Frank Leave a Comment

To all my friends in education, I hope the new school year brings much success to your students. I am writing to inform our readers about speaking engagements this fall, an encyclopedia entry, and two forthcoming publications.

This fall on Sunday mornings from 9:00-9:45am, I shall be co-teaching a twelve-week class on 1 & 2 Thessalonians. It will start on Sept 12 and end on Nov 14. The place is the Bradburn Clubhouse on the corner of Quitman and 118th Place in Westminster, Colorado. All are welcome! 1 Thess 4 and 2 Thess 2 are filled with eschatology, and I trust you will be edified.

An encyclopedia entry which I authored is out in publication. The entry is entitled “Morning Star, Greek and Latin Patristics and Orthodox Churches.” It appeared on pages 1041-1042 of Volume 19 of the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception published in 2021 in Boston by de Gruyter.

I am happy to announce that two books, which contain translations of ancient works on the Apocalypse by me with comprehensive introductions, are scheduled for publication this fall and spring respectively. The first is Pseudo-Cyril of Alexandria. Commentary on the Apocalypse: Introduction, Translation, and Transcription of a Lecture on Revelation 7-12 from Sixth-Century Egypt by Francis X. Gumerlock with Francesca Lecchi and Tito Orlandi (Middletown, RI: Stone Tower Press, forthcoming Fall 2021). Please consider purchasing it from the publisher or amazon, possibly as a Christmas present. The second is a translation of Cassiodorus’s (d. 580), Brief Explanatory Notes on the Apocalypse. It will appear in Volume 144 of Fathers of the Church (Washington, D.C.: The Catholic University of America Press, forthcoming Springs 2022). There are two other texts on the Apocalypse in this volume translated by other authors, and I trust you will be enlightened by all of them.

Have a wonderful autumn!

Dona nobis pacem!

Speaking Engagement on Tenth-Century Apocalypse Commentaries, June 26, 2021

June 12, 2021 by Frank Leave a Comment

On June 26, 2021, I shall be delivering a paper entitled “Tenth-Century Apocalypse Commentaries” at the Heller Center at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs at 11:45 am-12:30pm. There is no registration or fee; you can just show up. It is part of the annual symposium on apocalyptic literature hosted there for the past six years.

Previous works of mine explored commentaries on the Book of Revelation from the seventh, eighth, and ninth centuries (Early Latin Commentaries on the Apocalypse; The Carolingian Commentaries on the Apocalypse by Theodulf and Smaragdus). This paper briefly examines the contents and concerns of three commentaries written in the tenth century.

Also, if you would like to join virtually, send me an email, and I shall send you the link.

Wishing you a blessed summer.

Recent Publications, 2020

November 22, 2020 by Frank 1 Comment

I wanted to update you on some writings of mine that were published recently (in 2020).

Translations by me of portions of an anonymous early-fifth century commentary on 1 Thessalonians and a late sixth-century commentary on Titus by Students of Cassiodorus were published in Early Church Fathers Study Bible, New Testament (Kendallville, IN: Literal Truth Publishing, 2020), on pages 434, 437, 465, 466, 469. For a copy of the book, click here.

A chapter entitled “Antipas in Early Commentaries” was published in Gary DeMar with Francis X. Gumerlock, The Rapture and the Fig Tree Generation (Powder Springs, GA: American Vision Press, 2020), 95-102. In the chapter I survey traditions about the person Antipas, mentioned in Rev 2:13, found in early commentaries on Revelation. For a copy of the book, click here.

Also three book reviews that I wrote were published this year. They are: “Review of Guido Stucco, The Doctrine of Predestination in Catholic Scholasticism,” Puritan Reformed Journal 12:1 (Jan 2020):228-230; “Review of W. Brian Shelton, Quest for the Historical Apostles: Tracing Their Lives and Legacies,” Westminster Theological Journal 82:1 (Spring 2020):197-199; and “Review of C. Douglas Weaver, Baptists and the Holy Spirit: The Contested History with Holiness-Pentecostal-Charismatic Movements,” Fides et Historia 52:1 (Winter/Spring 2020):169-171.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas, with a prayer that our hearts may be drawn closer to Christ the Savior, this holiday season.
